Per CBS SF Bay Area, thousands, if not tens of thousands, of registered AR-15 gun owners in California are in limbo over the legality of their weapon due to the new law reclassifying bullet buttons.
The new law, which takes affect on Jan. 1, 2018, making bullet buttons on AR-15’s as assault weapons, thus the state of California closed a “loophole” described by the California Department of Justice. Starting in the new year, those weapons with a bullet button will have to be registered or modified, according to the report.
One “minor” problem, residents can’t even register their AR-15’s.
Because of the incompetence, or deliberate stalling tactic, the DOJ hasn’t opened its electronic registering system hanging thousands of law-abiding residents out to dry.
KPIX spoke with Guns Fishing and Other Stuff owner Travis Morgan about the situation.
“A lot of guys are going toward a featureless gun,” he told KPIX.
Morgan now sells modified AR-15’s, which are stripped of military-style features such as a collapsible stock, flash suppressor or forward pistol grip, which are no longer considered assault weapons.
“That way you don’t have to register it, you’ve got your gun and you’re done,” he said.
KPIX reports “there’s late word from Sacramento that the deadline for registering bullet button ARs will most likely be pushed back to July 1st of 2018, because of the registration delays.”
This obscene law is one reason why Cross Armory has engineered patented products for AR-15 owners. Our products, the QUICK PINS and SAFE MAG, allow for AR-15 owners to access their weapon consistent with the law.
