Gun Laws & FAQs

What are the laws regarding my AR in California?

The law passed in July 2016 states that “Any person who, from January 1, 2001, to December 31, 2016, inclusive, lawfully possessed an assault weapon that does not have a fixed magazine, as defined in Penal Code section 30515, including those weapons that can be readily removed from the firearm with the use of a tool (commonly referred to as a bullet-button weapon) must register the firearm before January 1, 2018.” (Note: This date has since been changed to July 1, 2018)

What do the California laws mean for my AR?

A “fixed magazine” is defined in the law as “an ammunition feeding device contained-in, or permanently attached to, a firearm in such a manner that the device cannot be removed without disassembly of the firearms action.”

“Disassembly of the firearm action” is also defined in the law to “mean that the fire control assembly is detached from the action in such a way that the action has been interrupted and will not function” (gun cannot fire bullet).

Directly from the law, this means that “disassembling the action on a two part receiver, like that on an AR-15 style firearm, would require the rear takedown pin to be removed, the upper receiver lifted upwards and away from the lower receiver using the front pivot pin as the fulcrum, before the magazine may be removed.”

Check out this reference guide from the CRPA & NRA for more details:

What are my options now that the registration period has closed?

Choose a “fixed magazine” solution

  1. The Cross Armory SAFE MAG was designed to follow the letter of the law passed. It will “fix” your magazine into place until you have “disassembled the action” of your firearm. The SAFE MAG will only release the magazine after the disassembly has occurred. Properly installed, the SAFE MAG is a magazine lock that will only release upon the removal of the rear takedown pin (or use of QUICK PINS that will make your life immensely more easy!).

OR

Choose a “featureless” solution

  1. Featureless solutions require AR owners to get rid of “evil features” such as a pistol grip, an adjustable rear buttstock and a flash hider. Cross Armory offers a solution for the adjustable rear buttstock. STOCK LOCK allows AR owners to lock their adjustable stock into one place, essentially rendering it as a fixed, without having to purchase a new buttstock. STOCK LOCK is easy to install and will not alter your AR in anyway. It can be easily removed if and when you take your AR to another state.

What products work for my AR in California?

For AR-15 owners:

SAFE MAG, QUICK PINS & FLOP STOP create the fastest and easiest reloading solution. We have several different SAFE MAGs designed to fit both MIL-SPEC and custom built AR-15s. If you are uncertain about the specifics of your rifle, please refer to “How do I know if my AR is MIL-SPEC?” below or contact techsupport@crossarmory.com.

For AR-10/.308 owners:

SAFE MAG .308 & QUICK PINS .308 are the first fixed magazine solution designed specifically for the .308/AR-10 platform. Because there is not a MIL-spec version of the .308/AR-10, there is a great deal of variation between different builds. Please take a look at the pictures and video on the SAFE MAG .308/AR-10 product page (found here) to determine which SAFE MAG .308 you should order. You will need to measure your upper receiver to determine the correct fit, so have it close by when you watch the video.

What is the difference between each Safe Mag?

All the Safe Mags function the same way, by automatically releasing the magazine when you separate the upper and lower.  The different models (MIL/DPMS/AERO/2) differ in size and shape in order to fit various models of AR-15 and AR-10.
Safe Mag MIL-Spec is for MIL – Spec rifles only (not all AR’s are MIL Spec) and automatically drops the mag when you separate the upper and lower receivers.
Safe Mag 2 is designed for all AR-15’s and works and functions exactly the same as Safe Mag MIL-Spec, but it’s shape is a bit different so that it will fit on all styles of AR-15 type rifles
SafeMag AERO – is for AR-10/.308 rifles that are made in the AERO style and size
SafeMag DPMS – is for AR-10/.308 rifles that are made in the DPMS size and shape.

How do I know if my AR is mil-spec (military specification)?

What makes an AR mil-spec?

Take a look at the images below. If your build matches these images and features, your AR is truly mil-spec.
